Harry Potter And The Cursed Child | Review & SPOILERS.

When I found out there was going to be a new Harry Potter based book, I could hardly contain my excitement. I'd have absolutely loved to watch the play, but with tickets selling out in around 3 seconds and the fact that it is London..it didn't look very likely. So when I found out they were releasing the script, I couldn't pre-order quick enough!

Harry Potter is a huge part of my life. I read them when they were originally released and I can remember the excitement of release day for them all, rushing to get home from school where my Mum always had a copy waiting. I would get in my comfiest pyjamas, snuggle up on the sofa and lose myself in the world for hours and hours. I have re-read the books so many times and I love them just as much now at 24 years old as I did back then. That's the thing with Harry Potter, you are never too old. After I had finished reading them I passed them on to my Mum & Dad who loved them just as much.

I'll start by saying that although JK Rowling is listed as one of the writers of the play, it was predominantly written by playwright Jack Thorne and director John Tiffany, and it is blatantly obvious. Although we do experience some HP nostalgia in the sense of flashbacks, the rest is written like a really bad fan-fiction.

Set 19 years after the Battle of Hogwarts, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, follows Harry, now a over-worked Ministry of Magic employee and his son Albus.
The story's main focus is Albus and his best friend Scorpius Malfoy on their struggle with living up to their parents legacy. Albus fails to meet his father's expectations and struggles to meet the same level of greatness.Whilst Scorpius struggles to deal with the rumours that he is Voldermort's son...I know right. WTF. There will be spoilers in this review so please bare that in mind if you continue reading!

I can't even explain how disappointed I was with this 'book/play'. Firstly, the characters!!! Harry was a complete *pardon my french* TWAT. He was horrible! Harry saying that he sometimes wishes Albus wasn't his son, that Mcgonagall doesn't understand how he feels because she doesn't have children and that if she doesn't do what he says, he will COME DOWN on her...bitch please!!!! This is so not Harry Potter that it has gone beyond a joke and actually really upset me. BANNING Albus from being friends from Scorpius..THAT WOULDN'T HAPPEN. Harry understands how important friendships are & it just wouldn't happen!
Ron was made into a complete joke. I loved Ron in the books, and he may not have had the best personality traits but I found that to be endearing and realistic! He was just completely exaggerated in this play and made into something he really wasn't.
Secondly, the play was just so fast paced that you couldn't just sit back and enjoy the story or feel happy about being back in Hogwarts and with the characters you love so much.

Bringing the Cedric storyline back,,why?! We left Cedric in book four where he died. I can think of so many other characters that are more worthy to bring back..Sirius, Snape, Fred, Lupin, Tonks?!!!
The whole time turner thing as well, we know they were destroyed in book five so why bring them back? They could have done so much with this story and created a really original idea. Albus and Scorpius decision to go back in time blah blah blah was just..a really bad idea. I know they were kids, but they were like 14..they would have known better!

Voldermort is so done. Why couldn't we have a new bad guy just to make it a little more believable? Plus him and Bellatrix Lestrange would never in a million years have sex. The idea literally disturbs me. I mean..I doubt it even crossed his mind to have sex!!! It just..no. I can't believe that they even went there.

The writers also completely let you believe that Albus and Scorpius were going to be more than friends and that their affections went beyond just a friendship and that they were actually in love with each other, which I was actually really routing for. NO. They completely squashed that at the end and pulled the rug out from under you, when Scorpius asked Rose to the dance. I can't understand why they would give us that idea to just..take it away and go nowhere with it.

To be honest, I feel like the whole thing was just a money making scheme. Which I know sounds ridiculous but that's how it made me feel. To be honest i'm really surprised that JK gave this the go ahead, I mean Harry Potter is her baby. She created this magical world that so many people completely fell in love with. For them to make a complete joke out of it. That is not okay with me. I wouldn't even call it the eighth book as it doesn't deserve that title.

Harry Potter is and always will be my favourite series ever. I'm just going to pretend that the latest monstrosity doesn't exist. Don't hate me..please. I'm sure the show will be amazing and the actors will be incredible, it's just the script that really disappointed me. I gave it 2.5 stars on goodreads which I thought was pretty generous.

Have you read the script? What did you think? If you enjoyed it, which I really hope some people did, then let me know :)
